ALS - also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease can be challenging to say the least. ALS is a neurological disease that attacks nerve cells and creates weakness in the legs, feet or ankles causing clumsiness and falls. Other symptoms may include weakness in the hands, muscle cramps or twitching, difficulty in holding the head upright, slurred speech, or trouble breathing.
Since ALS is a progressive disease, when looking for mobility solutions, it is best to think ahead one year, three years, five years, etc. to make sure your mobility equipment will carry you through all the stages with ease.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with ALS or just want to get additional information here are two sites that can help: ALS Orange County and ALS Association Golden West Chapter covering 31 counties in CA and all of Hawaii. If you are a military veteran here is a great organization filled with resources for all types of physical challenges: DAV California.
In this video below, you will see that our client was originally looking at installing an elevator or maybe two vertical platform lifts. After multiple meetings with our client as well as engineers, city hall and providing multiple quotes and options, the customer decided to choose a stair lift. It was a very challenging job since the staircase was extremely narrow and we had to modify the existing iron handrail to make room for the stair lift. Below you can actually see the installation process from start to finish.
